Jane Stark
A young percussionist and composer interested in feedback. She works with Josiah Padmanabham to coax unpredictable sounds from an electric piano.
Jane Stark is an improvising and ambient musician, percussionist and more, based in Boorloo.
Her passions include writing and performing the music she loves, which includes microtonal ambient, no-input noise, groove-based experimental rock, industrial techno, gentle ambient pop, and much more.
Her improvised practices include responses to unpredictable, and sometimes capricious, feedback loops. She is inspired by the organic sounds which can emerge from simple mechanical processes; drawing on the work of Alvin Lucier to use situation-specific elements as equal (if unpredictable) collaborators.
As a percussionist, she recently graduated from her Bachelor of Music from the WA Academy of Performing Arts (ECU). She played works by Reich, Xenakis, Liza Lim, Toshimitsu Tanaka and more, and performed regularly with WAAPA’s percussion ensemble Defying Gravity and its guest artists, directed by Tim White OAM. Guest artists include Dr Louise Devenish, Dr Fiona Digney, Dr. Rebecca Lloyd-Jones, Esfandiar Shahmir, Tao Issaro, Pavan Kumar Hari, Odai Nmai, Miella Mondlane, Arvis Mena Del Vedado, and many more. She has recently returned from a tour to China with the ensemble. During her degree, she performed in world premieres by Dr Alice Humphries, Thea Rossen, and more, with Defying Gravity, WAAPA Symphony Orchestra, Indian Ocean Ensemble, Nanjing University of Arts’ and Xinghai Conservatory of Music’s percussion ensembles, and more.
Additionally, she has played with/for BOOM International Festival of Percussion (with Fritz Hauser, Synergy Percussion, Dr Louise Devenish), Outcome Unknown, Noizemaschin, Annika Moses (Nika Mo, Great Statue), Heathcote Blue, Jenny Hickinbotham, Kira Gunn, Callum O'Reilly, Walyalup Weekend of Improvised Music, Rosie Shute, Cara Teusner-Gartland, Arielle Savory, Sam Markham, among others.
She enjoyed her international debut in August 2022, composing for Studio Kiin’s Haus of Memories exhibition at Tautai, Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland. This followed her collaboration with Koen Smailes composing and performing the music for WAAPA’s production of Suzie Miller’s play Caress/Ache. The music from this production received praise in Seesaw and Stage Whispers.
